An inspiring new international voice, who is both influenced by jazz and is bringing her own culture and creativity to the melting pot, is Malika Zarra. Born in Morocco, raised in France, and now thriving in the polyglot metropolis of New York City, this gifted composer, producer and singer has invented a new Moroccan urban-world-jazz by tastefully using traditional North African chaâbi, Berber and Gnawa polyrhythms to underpin her distinctly contemporary urban compositions, all the while maintaining a sophisticated improvisational modern jazz approach. Joining other fresh New York faces of the international jazz scene, such as Afro-Latin bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding, Zarra’s sultry multi-lingual vocals move effortlessly between Berber, Moroccan Arabic, French, and English.

Natural Information Society. Bassist and composer Joshua Abrams has been in the thick of Chicago's vibrant music scene for 15 years, playing and recording as leader and sideman in projects across the genres. He co-founded the "back porch minimalist" band Town & Country (Thrill Jockey/Box media) and Matana Roberts & Chad Taylor the trio Sticks & Stones (Thrill Jockey/482 Music). He has released four records under his own name as well as two under the moniker "reminder" that navigate the realms of jazz and improvisation, electro-acoustic composition, beatmaking, minimalism and field recordings (eremite/delmark/eastern developments/lucky kitchen). Abrams has appeared on over 50 recordings.

Formed in 1999, Wust El Balad features 8 talented musicians from all over Cairo. Their music, featuring guitar, oud, percussion, bass guitar and vocals has a soft rock tone, but never strays far from a more traditional Egyptian sound.

Following the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, Wust El Balad member Hany Adel gained a large following for his song, “Sout El Horreya” or “the sounds of freedom”. Wust El Balad seeks to ensure that their music can be heard by Egyptians of all social classes, and has thrown a number of widely successful street concerts in Cairo.

Alsarah and The Nubatones came together out of a collective love for Nubian music and a genuine belief that Soul transcends all cultural and linguistic barriers. Inspired by the pentatonic scale, Alsarah and The Nubatones blend a selection of Nubian 'songs of return' from the 1970s to today with original material and traditional music of central Sudan.

Influenced by American Jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald and Sufi Classical artists Abida Parveen and Reshma, Pakistani Singer Arooj Aftab presents an original sound, embraced by young and old from South Asia and beyond. Accompanied by acoustic guitar, upright bass, and electronic beats, Arooj represents the view of a young Pakistani at a cultural crossroads, a rich musical legacy combined with a globalized pop sound.

Chicago's best local latin and Colombian musicians come together to re-arrange and perform Colombian Cumbia classics as Grupo Cumbe. This internationally celebrated musical form born on the Caribbean coast of Colombia represents The marriage of African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences. This new group fuses traditional afro Colombian percussion, with elements of big band style Cumbia and jazz made famous by artists like Lucho Bermudez and the Discos Fuentes record label catalog. Incorporated are call & response vocals, raw traditional percussion courtesy of the Alegre, Tambora, Llamador & Maraca, bottom heavy electric bass lines, Gaita flutes, latin piano and jazz trumpet.

The Opposition Party is a ten-piece Chicago musical collective, centered around performance of polyrhythmic music, particularly the cross-pollination of African music, Jamaican reggae and dub, and American funk and jazz. Heavy grooves and high-energy rhythms come alive in a catalog that features music from artists like Ethiopiques, Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Thomas Mapfumo, Jackie Mittoo, and originals that stir up all these influences and bake them into something new.

Vibrant dancing, spectacular harmonies and undiscovered music of the Caribbean performed by a vocal and percussion ensemble little known outside of Cuba, The Creole Choir of Cuba have preserved musical treasures from Haiti, Dominica and Cuba within their rich descendant Cuban communities. Referred to as “Desandann” domestically, the group is composed from the descendants of several waves of Haitian migrants who escaped slavery at the end of the 18th century, or more recently came as laborers to work Cuba’s sugar plantations. Their repertoire consists of a wide range of choral arrangements with percussion accompaniment including Choucoune (a Haitian merengue), Gran Toumobile (a Creole Mazurka) and Doudou Moin (a Martinique merengue).

Calypso Caravan is brought together through the efforts of the International Arts Alliance whose mission is to honor the arts, heritage, history and cultural traditions in Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the world.

For over 50 years Calypso Rose has been the reigning Queen of Calypso of Trinidad and the world. She has received more honors and medals than any other living Calypsonian. She has composed over 800 songs from social and political commentary, to party music and inspirational hymns.

Lord Superior, also from Trinidad, was originally called “boy wonder”. He was given the name “Superior” from Lord Melody, writer of “Mama look a booboo“ and other tunes popularized by Harry Belafonte. Superior has performed internationally for over 50 years and is considered to be the guardian of Calypso's legacy and culture. He is a prolific composer, ace guitarist and a genius in the art of extempo.

Clyde "Lightning" George has lived in both Trinidad and Chicago. He began playing the steelpan as a young boy when the instrument was being created. His name was given to him by his teacher and the inventor of the double tenor steelpan because of his ability to learn music quickly. He has taken this skill into Chicago jazz clubs and has mastered the art of jazz improvisation. Early in his Chicago career Clyde worked with our very own jazz icons, Willie Pickens and Robert Shy, who join this group of illustrious musicians for their debut performance at World Music Festival: Chicago 2011.

2010 Latin Grammy nominee, Sierra Maestra, is now celebrating 34 years since its formation. Sierra Maestra was the first of the modern-era groups to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar, one trumpet, bongo, güiro and vocals — as during the “golden age” of this style in the 1920s and ’30s. They have been the pioneers in reviving this genre for new generations and reintroducing it into the Cuban mainstream. They named themselves after the mountain range in the eastern part of Cuba as a tribute to the birthplace of son.

One of the brightest music stories of the young 21st century is the burgeoning renaissance of globalized electronic music. From hip-hop’s plundering of bhangra, to the explosion of Balkan beat, baile funk, and the current cumbia revival, the past decade has seen a surge of interest in ethnic rhythms. And at the forefront stand artists such as Uproot Andy, who see each genre less as a scene to join, and more as a color to add to their palette—creating the world’s first post-geographic 'folk' music.

Andy first began making beats during his single digit years as a kid in Canada. This early passion eventually grew into a lifelong dedication to music, drawing inspiration from an eclectic selection of styles he has exposed himself to through the years. a DJ, as co-founder of New York City’s digi-global party Que Bajo?!, and as a producer for the ZZK and Bersa Discos labels.

“When you’re battling for your cultural survival, music can be a powerful weapon. With their pastoral nomadism under extreme duress from desertification, societal upheaval and political conflict, the Tuareg and Wodaabe peoples of northwest Africa struggle to balance their traditions with the pull of the modern world. Bands like Tinariwen and Etran Finatawa have become guitar-wielding standard bearers of social continuity, sharing their stories with a compelling, trance-y desert-blues choogle that stretches and contracts like the Sahara’s endless horizon. Unlike Tinariwen’s all-Tuareg lineup, Niger-based Etran Finatawa includes members from both groups: The Wodaabe influences give the group’s percussive cross-rhythms additional texture and complexity, while the vocals possess more of a keening nasal twang than those of their colleagues in the groove. Electric Junkyard Gamelan is the brainchild of band leader, composer and instrument builder Terry Dame. Performing her original groove-driven music on self-invented instruments this unique band has a distinct voice that is at once both old and new. Originally inspired by the interlocking rhythms of traditional Gamelan music from Bali, today the group's music is influenced by a diverse range of sounds from eastern modal music to funk, klezmer to hip hop. They perform on Dame's innovative instruments such as the Rubarp and Big Barp (electric rubber band harps), the Sitello (an electric cello/sitar combo), the Terraphone (copper pipe horn), the Clayrimba (a three octave tuned clay pot "marimba") and an arsenal of percussion instruments fashioned from old farm equipment, turntable platters, saw blades, and truck springs.

The result is a super original sound with lilting modal melodies, syncopated strings, funky bass lines and layers of dance-able interlocking rhythms that ride over clashes of metal on metal and colorful harmonic washes.

The musicians in EJG hail from diverse musical backgrounds.

Dame, a saxophonist and composer by training has studied music from around the world including Indonesia, the Middle East, the Balkans, India and Brazil. She has been living and working in New York City since 1985, composing and performing for film, video, theater, dance, and concerts.

Founded in 2006 by Nicaraguan pianist/composer, Darwin Noguera & Mexican trumpeter/composer Victor Garcia, these long-time musical collaborators envisioned an endeavor for Chicago that would follow in the innovative footsteps of the pioneering Cuban group Irakere, Arturo O'Farril's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Orchestra. This dynamic group is striving to continue the legacy of Latin Jazz big band, creating new original and genre-bending works.

The Midwest's only Latin Jazz Big Band celebrates their debut CD, “Blueprints” with a Salsa party at Mayne Stage! Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble (CALJE) formed in an effort to fuse the musical treasures of Afro-Latin American music and Jazz with musicians from Chicago's diverse Jazz community.

With a global sound and ensemble, this group uses Latin rhythms as a springboard to create aesthetic textures and sonic spaces, establishing CALJE as a new voice in the Latin Jazz genre.

from Spain, percussionists and Flamenco dancers. Alfonso Ponticelli introduced Chicago to gypsy jazz in the 1990s with inspiration from Django Reinhardt, pioneer virtuoso jazz guitarist and composer. Alfonso is a multi-instrumentalist, who has played banjo and guitar with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra and has studied abroad with the great gypsy flamenco guitarist Rafael Riqueni.

International Afrobeat great, Femi Kuti will drop his long-awaited new album Africa for Africa in the US tomorrow. This time around, Femi took the recording back to Decca studio where his father Fela laid down some of his classics; it's evident from the sound that Femi drew from that inspiration while setting his sound apart with his politically charged lyrics and driving beats.

Those who have followed his career and have experienced his music know this for a fact: Femi Kuti never felt just satisfied with being the King's heir. He freed himself from his father's legacy in '85 by putting together his own band, The Positive Force, and thereby working to find his own voice. He became, during the '90s, a renowned artist in his own right with a distinctive, colorful and balanced style. His new album, “Africa For Africa” goes back to the roots of his music, and was recorded at Decca Studio, the premier studio in Afrobeat’s history. He will tour North America this spring in support of the album. More than just a simple musician, the 48-year old composer has become a true African Ambassador, in its most honorable sense. Femi was in Johannesburg to sing for Africa the opening ceremony for the Football World Cup. There he sang one of his hits "Beng Beng Beng," and took the opportunity to meet a few of the anti-Apartheid heroes. Shortly after, he was heading off to New York to see the famous and very successful Broadway musical about Fela, where he also got to appear on stage, invited by the actors at the end of the show. His venue the Shrine still carries the torch week in week out, so much so it has become one of the only last dynamic temples for live African music. Erykah Badu, Damon Albarn, Hugh Masekala have recently made appearances, as have the Lagos Police, who regularly raid the place, picking up and frightening off the local crowd, as they try to close down this highly regarded resistance venue

Within My Walls features a diverse roster of guests and promises to bring even greater worldwide fame to this unique multicultural collective. Six years ago, when Israeli keyboardist and composer Idan Raichel was an unknown musician working in a home studio in his parent’s basement in a small city near Tel Aviv, fusing Israeli pop music with Middle Eastern, African, Indian and other global sounds, he never anticipated the impact his unique approach would soon have. His “experiment” resulted in one of the biggest-selling records in Israeli history and propelled him to become a major figure in the international global music scene. On the heels of that explosive rise in popularity, record-breaking sales in Israel and sold-out performances across the globe to rapturous crowds in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, he returns to lead The Idan Raichel Project for their second international album, Within My Walls. Much of Within My Walls was recorded over the past few years while Idan was on tour, during recording sessions in hotel rooms, backstage dressing areas, private homes and other impromptu settings. His poetic lyrics reflect these travels and contemplations; sung in Hebrew, Moroccan Arabic, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole and Swahili, the songs address the struggle for personal fulfillment and the true meaning of love in a conflicted and complex world. Along the way, Idan recorded and co-wrote songs with Colombian singer Marta Gómez, Cape Verdean luminary Mayra Andrade and the silken-voiced Somi of Rwandan and Ugandan heritage. Inspired by the lush, moody strings of Nick Drake, Idan assembled a 24-piece orchestra and worked with Israeli arranger Assaf Dar to transpose his engaging melodies into an orchestral format. Bossa Tres began in 1994 when Marcos Oliveira joined forces with Luciano Antonio to play in a samba group called Chicago Samba. After years of playing together, Luciano and Marcos realized they both had the same musical ideas. In 2003, Marcos joined Luciano again in another musical journey where both played in a group with a different musical style called Evanston Escola de Samba (today called Orquestra de Samba). They initially had a Latin-ska sound in mind, but as their ranks expanded, they soon began hosting high-energy gigs at various ersatz clubs and spaces in Mexico City’s largely improvised rock scene. They take their name from a classic novel about the Mexican Revolution, and they fervently believe that change comes from below. "Of course, the ideas had an influence on the music," says Yocu. "This became the most punk and radical thing: combining our sentiments with the strength and heat of Afro-Latin rhythms." They are an exciting combination of rock energy, salsa, reggae and cumbia. Guitarist/Composer Carlo Basile says, "This new work excerpts samples of well known Spanish guitar works but it also brings in new musical materials from an eclectic mix of sources with Pink Floyd style riffs, Senegalese grooves from Baaba Maal, West African blues from Ali Farka Toure, and Indian vocals." Basile was also interested to see how dancers from three different genres (Flamenco, Modern and African) would digest and interpret these materials. "The dancers and musicians seem to have found emotional and physical connections through this work. It is inspiring to be part of this collaboration," says Basile. In “Music and Movement,” Spanish guitar music becomes the starting point for a fusion of melody, groove, and movement. The melodic materials of composers such as Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, and Satie are combined with flamenco rhythms and other musical genres such jazz, West African blues, electronica and rock grooves to form a foundation for dance movement. The performance features three sections of Flamenco, Modern, and West African dance.
